Muharram is the first month of the Muslim calendar. It is one of four holy Islamic months and is second to Ramadan in importance. The word Muharram means “prohibited” as in a time where bloodshed was prohibited during pre-Islamic times. Muharram is especially holy for Shia Muslims as it is the month in which the third Shia Imam, Imam Husayn ibn Ali (as) was martyred. The holiest day of the month of Muharram is the Day of Ashura.

The Day of Ashura is the 10th day of the holy Islamic month of Muharram. It is held sacred by Shia Muslims as it is the day that Imam Husayn ibn Ali (as) and his companions were martyred. Shias commemorate this day every year with mourning.

Ziyarat literally means to “visit”. In Islamic technical terms, it refers to pilgrimage to holy sites. For Shia Muslims, it usually refers to a holy pilgrimage to the shrines and graves of the Prophet (s) and his Ahl al-Bayt (as).

Imam Husayn ibn Ali (as) was the son of Imam Ali (as) and the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (s) through his daughter Fatima al-Zahra (as). Imam Husayn (as) was martyred on the 10th of the Islamic month of Muharram which is otherwise known as the Day of Ashura.
